“Do I need to insulate the walls of my SheShed cabin?”. When our customers are starting to plan their SheShed cabin build, this is one of the most common questions we are asked and the answer is no; you don’t have to add any extra insulation to your SheShed, but it’s really easy to do so if you’d like to have it. Read on to find out more.

Natural Insulation with Nordic Spruce

Timber is natural insulator and the timber used to construct a SheShed is no different. The natural insulating properties of timber mean that your SheShed cabin will help maintain a comfortable temperature year round.

All of our SheShed cabins are built from premium Nordic Spruce timber, a cold climate, slow growing species. The wood is kiln-dried by 14% – 16% in specialised drying chambers to prevent the deformation of its structure ensuring that the wood fits together nicely when assembled.

Our cabins with 28mm timber have a natural insulation of R1.96 for the walls, and our cabins with 44mm timber are approximately R3.08. These ratings are before adding any additional insulation to your cabin and combined with the included double-glazed doors and windows, it means your cabin is comfortable from day one.

Many of our customers find that once constructed, their SheShed is already well prepared for the seasons year-round.

Assembly Makes a Difference

Ensuring that you assemble your SheShed correctly plays a big part in the insulation performance. When putting your cabin together, it is crucial to ensure that all components fit snug and that there are no gaps between the walls, window frames or door seals. This helps prevent heap escaping, allowing the natural insulating properties of the Nordic Spruce and double-glazing to work as well as possible.

Can I Add Extra Insulation to My SheShed Cabin?

Yes! You can. Even though your SheShed cabin is naturally insulated from day one, there are many climates around Australia which have fluctuations in temperature where the addition of extra insulation would be beneficial. For example, if you live in an area with very harsh winters or scorching summers, or if you plan to use your SheShed year-round as a home office, guest sleepout or even a hobby space, the extra insulation can provide your cabin with an additional layer of comfort.

When it comes to insulating your SheShed, you have a number of options. Our roof insulation kit is a natural first choice. Adding insulation between the timber ceiling boards and the asphalt shingles is the easiest way to add a layer of insulation while maintaining the look of your SheShed. (Note: A roof insulation blanket is included with the steel roof kit option.)

Wall and floor insulation can also easily be added to your SheShed cabin. For those looking to insulate the walls, wall insulation brackets are available as an option upgrade to your SheShed. If you need to fix vertical battens to the walls of your cabin, using slotted wall insulation brackets allows for the natural expansion and contraction of the wall boards during changing weather and seasons. This is critical in helping to prevent unnecessary gaps or warping in the walls of your cabin.

Additionally, you can also look at adding underfloor insulation or even builders wrap to floor (readily available from a local hardware store).

Making the right choice for your cabin

At the end of the day, choosing if you’d like to add insulation to the walls or roof of your SheShed is of course up to your personal comfort and climate conditions. However, for most SheShed owners, their cabin is perfectly comfortable just as it comes. If you do decide that an extra layer of insulation will give you peace of mind and make the space more comfortable, you’ve got a few options and they’re very easy to add.
